ISCoS 2026 Pre-Conference Workshop

ISCoS Prevention Pre-Workshop Day

The Changing Epidemiology of Spinal Cord Injury: a focused half-day workshop exploring a decade of shifting risks and the implications for future SCI prevention.

Workshop Overview

The changing landscape of SCI risk, injury mechanisms and prevention priorities.

Over the past decade, the epidemiology of spinal cord injury has undergone important changes. Shifts in demographics, mobility patterns, advances in injury prevention strategies and survival after trauma have altered the distribution of injury mechanisms and risk profiles in many regions of the world. In particular, ageing populations and the growing contribution of fall-related injuries are transforming the landscape of SCI.

Workshop Focus

A broader epidemiological perspective to inform prevention, policy and research.

Through presentations and expert discussion, participants will review global and regional SCI trends, consider the social and demographic drivers of injury risk, and reflect on how these patterns may influence prevention priorities in the coming decade.

Changing SCI Epidemiology

Examine how SCI incidence, causes and risk profiles have evolved over the past ten years across global and regional settings.

Shifting Risk Patterns

Explore demographic, societal and environmental factors reshaping spinal cord injury mechanisms and prevention priorities.

Future Prevention Priorities

Consider how emerging epidemiological trends may influence research, prevention strategies, policy and future planning.

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

01
Describe the key changes that have occurred in the epidemiology of SCI over the past decade. Understanding how injury patterns and risk profiles have shifted over time.
02
Identify the demographic, social and environmental factors contributing to changing risk patterns for SCI. Connecting epidemiological change with wider societal, ageing and mobility trends.
03
Discuss how changing epidemiological trends might influence future prevention priorities and research topics. Translating trend analysis into prevention and policy considerations.
Workshop Programme

Three hours of expert insight, regional perspectives and interactive discussion.

The programme examines global and regional changes in SCI epidemiology, the forces driving those changes, and how emerging evidence can be translated into future prevention priorities.
